Mike Downs - Managing Director

NZCE (Civil). BE (Hons)

Mike is a highly seasoned professional with over 40 years of experience in the Contracting and Construction industry, both in New Zealand and internationally. Throughout his extensive career, he has been involved in a wide range of projects, From residential and commercial developments to infrastructure and industrial projects, Mike has accumulated an unparalleled depth of knowledge and expertise. His reputation for successfully managing projects and effectively collaborating with diverse teams has earned him tremendous respect within the industry. Contractors and clients alike recognise and value Mike's unrivaled experience and his ability to deliver exceptional results on even the most complex ventures.

As a site supervisor, Carl brings over two decades of experience and expertise to Earthworks and Paving. Having joined the company in 1998, he quickly demonstrated his dedication and knowledge in his field, earning himself the position of foreman in 2007. Carl's extensive experience has made him well-versed in the CSS construction and drainage specifications, enabling him to efficiently oversee and manage various construction projects. Not only is he experienced in construction, but Carl is also a CCC Authorised Drainlayer, showcasing his expertise in drainage systems. With his qualifications, experience, and strong work ethic, Carl is an invaluable asset to the Earthworks & Paving team.

Daniel Bruerton - Contracts Engineer

Daniel started working for Earthworks & Paving in 2021, as a labourer while studying at university, gaining valuable hands-on experience. During his time as a student, he worked closely with Mike Downs, which allowed him to further develop his technical skills, gain insight into real-world construction practices, and understand the expectations of professional engineering roles.

Daniel graduated from the University of Canterbury in 2024 with a Bachelor of Engineering degree in civil engineering, and he has been appointed as a contract engineer—a role that reflects Earthworks & Paving’s ongoing commitment to internal career progression. In his new position, Daniel is responsible for using the GPS rover to accurately carry out site set-outs, ensuring that construction aligns precisely with design specifications. He is also tasked with compiling quality assurance (QA) records and producing detailed as-built documentation, both of which are critical for project compliance, accountability, and successful project delivery.

Jane Gutry - QHSE Manager

As the Quality, Health & Safety, and Environmental Manager, Jane has been an integral part of Earthworks & Paving 2012 Limited since 2013. Her role revolves around the effective management and implementation of QHSE systems and procedures for our company. With her expertise and experience, Jane ensures that quality standards are upheld, health and safety protocols are adhered to, and environmental responsibilities are fulfilled. Her meticulous approach to maintaining and improving our QHSE practices demonstrates her commitment to safeguarding our workforce, promoting excellence, and minimising our environmental impact. Nicola Broekhuizen - Accounts Manager

As the Accounts Manager at Earthworks & Paving, Nicola has been diligently managing various financial responsibilities since 2003. Her role encompasses overseeing the day-to-day operations of accounts payable and receivable, carefully handling payroll tasks, and efficiently managing general office duties.
